Retainer Repair

What is a retainer and why is it important?

A retainer is an orthodontic appliance designed to maintain the results of braces treatment. Its role is to keep teeth in their corrected position while the surrounding tissues adapt. With proper use, a retainer ensures your new smile remains stable for years.

There are two main types:

  • removable retainers (clear aligner-type trays worn as instructed);
  • fixed retainers (a thin wire bonded to the back of the teeth).

Both types require care and regular check-ups.

When does a retainer need repair?

Even high-quality retainers may need fixing over time:

  • cracks or deformation in a clear tray;
  • detachment of a bonded wire;
  • looseness or movement of the retainer;
  • discomfort or irritation.

In such cases, it is essential to see an orthodontist promptly to prevent teeth from shifting.

How is the repair done?

  • if a tray is cracked or deformed, a new one is made;
  • if a bonded wire detaches, it is cleaned and rebonded;
  • in severe cases, a full replacement may be necessary.

The procedure is quick, painless, and usually completed in a single visit.

Why you shouldn’t delay

Even a few weeks without a retainer can cause teeth to drift back toward their original position. This can compromise your orthodontic results and the time and money invested.
